Antique French Fashion Plate – La Mode Illustrée – Children’s Costumes, 1877 (No. 22)
After Anaïs Toudouze | Engraved by Reville | Printed by Gilquin, Paris
Size: approx. 11 x 15.5 inches

Original 19th-century French fashion plate from the celebrated Parisian journal La Mode Illustrée, published in 1877 (issue no. 22). This authentic period engraving illustrates children’s costumes from the Grands Magasins du Louvre, one of Paris’s most fashionable and influential department stores of the era.

The plate is after a design by renowned French artist Anaïs Toudouze, engraved by Reville, and printed by Gilquin, Imprimerie, Paris. The publication imprint at the bottom reads “Bureaux du Journal, 56 rue Jacob, Paris,” confirming its Parisian origin and official distribution by La Mode Illustrée.

The scene depicts a refined group of boys and girls at leisure in an elegant garden or terrace setting. The children are dressed in fashionable late-19th-century attire: boys in tailored jackets, waistcoats, knee breeches, stockings, and buttoned boots; girls in decorative dresses with structured bodices, layered skirts, lace trim, and period footwear. Playful details include a hoop toy, a floating balloon, and a child seated on the grass, creating a lively yet genteel composition. Classical stone architecture and lush greenery frame the figures, emphasizing the affluence and sophistication associated with Parisian bourgeois life.

The engraving features fine linework with selective hand coloring, particularly in soft blue tones, characteristic of high-quality French fashion plates of the period. The image served both as a decorative illustration and as a visual catalog showcasing current children’s fashions available from a leading Paris retailer.
